Κάποιες ιδέες ξεκινάνε τυχαία.

Όπως αυτή. Εδώ και μια 30ετία, συνήθως σε γενέθλια ή γιορτές φίλων, εκτός από ένα δώρο στέλνω κατα καιρούς και κάποια μικρή αυτοσχέδια ιστορία. Κάπως έτσι γύρω στο Γενάρη του 2022 έγραψα μια μικρή ιστορία σχετικά με το θέμα μιας αυτοέκδοσης που έγινε με αφορμή τα γενέθλια ενός φίλου. Σκαλίζοντας το μυαλό μου για κάποιο όνομα ξεφύλλισα στο γραφείο μου το ημερολόγιο της δουλειάς, πέφτοντας τυχαία στις 17 Ιουνίου που ένας από τους αγίους που γιορτάζουν είναι ο Ισμαήλ. Αυτόματα το μυαλό μου πήγε στο Μόμπυ Ντικ του Χέρμαν Μέλβιλ («Λέγε με Ισμαήλ», είναι η φράση που ξεκινά το βιβλίο) και το χρησιμοποίησα.

Ελάχιστους μήνες αργότερα και ενώ είμαι καθ’ οδόν για τη Θεσσαλονίκη, εν μέσω μετακόμισης ετοιμάζομαι να εκδώσω μια κασέτα του Σάββα Μεταξά για την άφιξη στην πόλη εν είδη γιορτής. Συμπτωματικά η μέρα που έχω ανακοινώσει την κυκλοφορία είναι η 17η Ιουνίου. Κι όπως και στην ιστορία που έγραψα για το φίλο εκείνη την ημέρα ο φανταστικός Ισμαήλ συναντά και δεξιώνεται φίλους του ή κάνουν κάποια δράση, έτσι αποφάσισα από εκείνη τη στιγμή και στο εξής κάθε χρόνο εκείνη την ημέρα να στήνεται κάποια δράση στην πόλη. Αυτή τη φορά ψηφιακή με τη συνδρομή του Κωστή Δρυγιανάκη, που ήταν ο πρώτος φίλος που του έγραψα αυτοσχέδια ιστορία για δώρο γενεθλίων πριν από σχεδόν 30 χρόνια.



Some ideas are born accidentally.

Like this one. For the past 30 years, I have often written short stories to accompany gifts I send to friends for their birthdays or name days. It was for such an occasion that at some point in January 2022 I wrote a short story for a friend's birthday. Racking my brain for a name for its protagonist, I looked through the calendar on my office desk and came across the name of St. Ishmael, who is celebrated by the Orthodox church on the 17th of June. Immediately my mind went to the hero of Herman Melvile's Moby Dick, as well as the book’s opening line, “Call me Ishmael”, and came to use it.

Few months later, I am on the road to Thessaloniki and moving to my new apartment there, while also about to announce the release of a tape by Savvas Metaxas to celebrate my arrival in the city. It so happens that the release date I have settled on is the 17th of June, the day of St. Ishmael. And just as in my little story my fictional character Ishmael hosts a feast, an action or exhibition, I decided that from that moment on, every year on June 17th, I would be organising a small event or action in the city to celebrate. For this year the event is digital, with a release by my friend Costis Drygianakis, who was also the first friend for whom I ever wrote a short story 30 years ago on the occasion of his birthday.
